A Shout out to Kelowna and Okanagan Video Game Developers

At the last OK Game Developer Cluster meet-up we discussed the need to get more people networked and involved in the local Game Developer here in Kelowna.  It is a wonderful blessing to have Disney and Club Penguin in our beautiful city as they has no doubt inspired many people to pick up the trade and try their hand at game design however we can accomplish so much more if we have the means to meet up, discuss and learn from each other.

So if you are in the Okanagan and are serious about developing games either in a team or as a lone wolf operation join the newly created linked in group here: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2416493 .  Feel free to contact myself, add me on twitter (www.twitter.com/ryanwiancko) and just reach out to this growing community.

And of course if you want more information and articles in audio format on game design and the business make sure to head over to www.industrybroadcast.com

A VERY sexy rundown of the PS3 – All Praise the PS3

YouTube Preview Image

I’ve always given props to sony for the technological marvel that is the PS3.  It is unfortunate that technological advancement as apposed to true play innovation was their main goal with this round and will be the cause of their downfall because this is a machine that if truly harnessed can change the world drastically.  This commercial is damn sexy though, almost makes me want to go out and buy one, almost.. I’m a PC gamer till I die baby :)

Here’s what all that power can do.. Keep in mind this is in game footage, not prerendered.

To put it in perspective here

is a shot from Final Fantasy: A spirit Within. This shot had to be pre-rendered on millions and millions of dollars worth of SGI supercomputers

Now this shot from Heavy Rain is rendered in REAL TIME while you are playing the game on a system that costs less than 500.00 now:

Tracking Game Innovation

Wow, I am pretty jazzed at this find today.. I stumbled across this on LostGarden, the website of famed Industry Vet Daniel Cook, and was just blown away by what I found.

http://www.gameinnovation.org/ has taken a detailed historical look at the specific innovations that have come along in Game History and laid it all out in an easy to navigate chart.  Really a good way to spend a few minutes and update yourself on our past.
