Getting more and more excited for AMD’s Fusion APU’s in 2011

I’ve been putting off upgrading my laptop for 2 years now in anticipation of the new line of Fusion APU’s from AMD to be released in 2011.  While Intel may have won my heart in the desktop market, pioneering one of the most important advances in transitors since their invention decades ago AMD is positioned to win my heart in the mobile market by boldly combining the CPU and the GPU into one of the most beautiful love childs this industry has seen.  Keep in mind we aren’t talking about an integrated graphics solution such as Intels abysmal GMA series, we are talking about about the culmination of ATI’s merger with AMD to create a whole new kind of processing unit, a hybrid of the two (if you don’t have nerd chills yet you should probably see a doctor).  To put it in perspective, think of fitting Nvidia’s Ion 2 graphic core into Intel’s dual core Atom die, while using less silicon and shrinking the package size

What we are seeing out of testing is performance comparable to dual core intel chips, much much higher 3D performance with power consumption dropping by up to 40%..  What can you do with a 40% increase in your battery life? Pretty damn exciting isn’t it?

I must say that after the revelation of Intel’s abhorrent business practices in connection with dell showing how intel is basically using their size to ensure AMD never has a fair competitive advantage in the market I am hoping with all my heart that AMD just takes intel to the fucking cleaners on this and starts to mop the floor with them in the netbook and notebook market. I for one will be out there supporting this beautiful piece of innovation.  It almost makes me excited to know that these fusion APU’s will be powering the next generation of apple products, almost but not quite enough to get me over the feeling that putting these chips in macs soils them in the most disgusting and repulsive of ways.  But whatever, if it helps them get a foot hold so be it, and seeing as they’ve released open source drivers already for us Linux geeks I’m tickled pink!

Some great articles I’ve read recently that will fill you in on all the juicy(and technical) details of the beautiful birthing that is about to take place.

A Windows OS vs Snow Leopard benchmarks are in. Prepare not to be surprised

Just caught this story on Cnet and thought I’d share.  Benchmarks of Windows 7 Vs Snow Leopard are coming in and the results are pretty much what you’d expect them to be.  Windows trumps the show with 3D stuff and Gaming, Snow Leopard takes the cake with Multitasking, encoding and boot times, as well as Battery life.

The entire article can be found here: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31012_7-10319612-10355804.html and here are some of the highlights:

The conclusion? First all of all, you’ll get much better battery life running OS X on Mac laptops than running Windows. Secondly, performance-wise, Windows 7 is probably a better choice if you are a gamer (there are more games developed for Windows, anyway), even on Mac hardware.

Third, if you can get by with just software designed by Apple and if money is not a big issue, you will be happy with a Mac. Examples of these software choices are iTunes, iLife, QuickTime, Safari, iChat, and so on (and you probably won’t need much more than those for daily entertainment and communication needs). Finally, if money is not an issue–and it definitely is for most of us–you should get a Mac anyway. It’s the only platform, for now, that can run both Windows and OS X.

Apple is PURE EVIL, or at least very easily could be

Why is it that no one on the entire planet seems to see this? Is it because apple has this cute, user friendly, underdog persona that everyone is content to overlook their general business model and just look on them as the cute little puppy dog in the corner?  I just don’t get it..  Lets take a bit of a closer look shall we?

iPod / itunes:

So this is the single only reason Apple even exists today, well that and being bailed out my Microsoft some time ago, so it’s is one of the most important aspects of their evilness as it is the only real power they have in this world(no body cares about the 2% market penetration of Mac, just like no one bothers to keep opera or Safari in mind when they design websites).  The iPod represents nearly 75% of the mp3 player market, and while that is a far cry from the 90% market share that windows represents it is still large enough to approach a monopoly.. So when someone with this much power and this much marketshare demands that if you want to interact and put files on their hardware you are forced, no choice whatsoever, to use their software.. but not only that, you are forced to use their DRM.  The even scarier aspect is that in the end they can even control which artists, which music can be put on an ipod.  What happens when they don’t feel the lyrics and tones of Tupac, Big-E, Marylin Mason, or Tool aren’t appropriate for mass consumption?  How is it that we blindly allow one company to control the music that 75% of the world is allowed to listen to, as well as dictate the DRM’s that artists have to use?

Another aspect is the iTunes Store.  I run podcasts and in order for me to even be listed on iTunes I need to have all of my personal information as well as credit card on file with them just to submit it for free.  Why?  Well because they say so that’s why.

Mac OS:

Don’t even get me started on how pathetic of an operating system this is, that is a topic for another conversation, or how incredibly insecure it is(http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/security/soa/Mac-OS-X-hacked-under-30-minutes/0,130061744,139241748,00.htm) because of the complacecy excercised by a company that has never had to really even consider security due to their incredibly low market share yet flaunts just how safe their OS is at every turn.  But the biggest piss off about this OS is that they have taken a beautifully open linux kernel and then closed it off.  They reap the rewards and benefits from an open sourced project and then turn around and tell the world that while they may make minor improvements to some aspects no one is allowed to do the same with their changes..  It’s all kept behind closed doors and we’re going to just keep our secrets to ourselves.

In the end it is mainly the iTunes / iPod aspect of this company that pisses me off to no end, and while I’ll admit that they did stand up to the record labels and tell them to shove their new greedy pricing structure up their asses a few years back, the potential of what could be done with this power if this company ever went down a slightly different path or had different leadership is scary.  We’ve all seen Microsoft get slapped with anti-trust suit after anti-trust suit for far far less than what Apple is doing with iTunes and yet because this company is that cute little puppy dog we just kind of pat them on the head and tell them how good they are..

iPhone Brings Zelda one step closer to Reality

My gods, this is the very first thing that gives the iPhone validity in my eyes.  Smule.com has brought out 4 musical instruments for the iPhone, the coolest of course being the Ocarina.  Obviously the Ocarina hit the scene some time ago, 12,000 or so years by some estimates, however it was one of the greatest installments of Zelda that firmly planted this instrument into the hearts of millions.

Introduction

Ocarina is the first true musical instrument created for the iPhone. Both experts and beginners will be amazed by this innovative player. Ocarina is sensitive to your breath, touch and movements, making it even more versatile than the original. Unlike other musical applications, there are no pre-compiled riffs so musicians will find unlimited opportunities for self-expression. Advanced options allow you to choose between diatonic, minor and harmonic scales. Or channel your favorite video game adventurer with Smule’s Zeldarian mode.

Now this app as it is more than wow’s any soft-hearted geek, however they went and threw in a wicked and innovative network feature that allows you to listen in on the songs being played on any iPhone worldwide. There is a ‘globe’ view in the app where you are presented with a 3D world littered with a number of little dots presumably representing every active Ocarina. The app will automatically start playing one of these, highlighted by a series of green blobs rising from Earth, each of which corresponds to a note.  Obviously you are going to have to sort through a ton of horrendous people trying to invoke the Magic of Zelda however you might stumble across somebody that sounds like this

A little Background info on Smule:
