All Time High-Score for Overgod’s Time Trial

Well googling ‘Overgod’ and ‘time trial’ and ‘high school’ come up with absolutely zero results, so here’s hoping that there’s actually someone else out there that plays this game as much as I do and will stumble upon this.  Better yet, here’s to hoping there are a few hundred people out there like that :)

Seeing as there isn’t a world-wide top score list anywhere for what might be one of the funnest most addicting games I’ve ever played I figured I’d start one.  Especially in celebration of my new high-score yesterday which completely blew anything I’ve done previously so far out of the water it’s not even funny.  In fact the only reason it wasn’t higher was because I was dealt an indestructible enemy at the end, boooerns!

So leave a comment below with a link to a screenshot of your high-score table and I’ll add it to the list, for now this looks horribly narcissistic but it’s gotta start somewhere:

  1. 1 Hour+: Josh Triplett (No screenshot but this bug report)
  2. 1:00:36 – Ryanw

Best Tower Defense game hands down

http://www.maxgames.com/game/the-horde-2.html

Without a doubt the best Tower Defense game I have played, and I’ve played a lot of them :) There is a ton of rethinking your strategy as you go throughout, just the right amoutn of challenge where youcan adopt new strategies, test and refine before getting too frustrated and giving up.

The complexity of the game is also amazing, my only complaint is that the levels weren’t long enuogh to allow me to experiment more with my workshops and such.

Sony’s and Microsofts new 3D Controllers

The tracking on this thing looks really impressive(“Sub-milimeter accuracy”).  To take the Wii Experience, but better, and put it on the power of the PS3 is enticing to say the least.

And M$ wouldn’t be outdone by Sony and is also jumping on the Nintendo Bandwagon.  Now what we really should be excited is to see, maybe not this year, what Nintendo is doing to improve it’s system so that it can stay ahead of the competition as they look to enter into a domain and market created by Nintendo.

Mortal Online – Are we seeing the rise of the hardcore MMO’s?

Or the Re-Rise I should say as that is how we started.  This one looks very pretty and has a lot going for it that Darkfall does, except hopefully they won’t botch the launch as completely as that one.  Full PVP, full loot drop, real time first person combat, and this is one hell of a pretty game

Best Use of Music in Video Game Trailers

YouTube Preview Image

Added Multiwinia to the top because A.) I’ve got mad respect for Introversion and their products but this trailer is just a bold brilliant move.  The piano makes you instantly sad for the suffering and pain of war.  The brilliance lies that you feel, albeit only slightly, this tinge of sadness for the scenes you are witnessing, when the scenes and the game multiwinia itself is so abstact that normally you would never feel this.  Great GREAT game, great company, wicked use of music and to make a trailer that essentially tells you nothing about the game who’s purpose is only to illicit an emotional response well that takes balls and brains, cause they pulled it off.

YouTube Preview Image

Such a beautiful song that lends itself surprisingly well to the trailer, a testament to those who created it.

YouTube Preview Image

You have to give them credit, the boys over at the M$ marketing department know better than anyone how to create a compelling experience with audio in a game trailer

YouTube Preview Image

Original WoW trailer.  The song on the soundtrack is called ‘A Call to Arms’(are at least it’s similar enough to see it was used) and is one of the most powerful game pieces ever written.  It’s too bad the song is slightly muted, worth listening to it all on it’s own here

YouTube Preview Image

I had to bring in a trailer from AITD as the 2008 OST is definitely one of the more powerful soundtracks created in recent years.

How many companies offer remixes of their commercials? I mean come on, the musical component in itself might not be worthy of a mention but it’s use and the fact that money was spent to pump this out sure as hell is.  Plus it might have the best last line for any trailer ever :)

YouTube Preview Image

One of the most recognizable pieces of music from any game trailer without a doubt.  I dare you not to get goose bumps from this.

Bravo!  When faced with the challenge of how to represent visually the music of the Beatles in a trailer they could have gone down so many cop out, traditional routes but instead they put their balls out there and made something beautiful and creative.

Beautiful song for sure, good call Ubisoft

YouTube Preview Image

I’ve had no choice but to smile ear to ear with every trailer for this game, but the music in this one makes me more than otheres :)

YouTube Preview Image

There can be no denying the brilliant pairing of Big Band style music with the visual style presented in TF2.  Both compliment and strengthen each other so well that one viewing of a TF2 commercial and it’ll be in your head for days.

YouTube Preview Image

The mellow guitar riff beautifully juxtaposes what is going on in the scene.  Plus the big band sounding theme for TF2 itself is brilliant.

YouTube Preview Image

The song just makes everything seem so serene and graceful, even when it involves violence.  I imagine that being the point EA was going for to describe the way the character in mirrors edge moves and acts

Got some more that I missed here?  By all means lets hear it!

***Additional Suggestions I Missed***

Brilliant, again the use of music to juxtapose what is happening in the music has such a great impact I am surprised we aren’t seeing this technique more

Lord of the Rings Online – My first 6 hours

So I’ve been going through a real LOTR kick lately.  After finishing watching the Extended version Trilogy again, I then went through all 6 DVD’s of the Making of and now I’m going through the Cast Commentary of each film.  I suppose watching all of this and immersing myself in the Film project has given me an immense appreciation for the incredible effort that went into this film, I would say more so than any other films in human history.  I say this because I feel that this could be directly responsible for how I feel about LOTRO.

After finishing the films again I was left with an incredible desire to explore this world in much more detail and on my terms.  A testement to the amazingness of our times that now that option is available to me.  My problem however is that I wanted to explore a world as rich as the one created in the films(visually) or as captivating as the world created in the books.  Perhaps this was an unfair expectation in Turbine but upon entering Middle Earth in Lord of the Rings Online I was immensly dissapointed, and my guess is that many other players also are.

Visual: When you watch the films there is absolutely no mistaking that the world of cinema has never seen works that match the visual authenticity and sophistication of LOTR.  Not strictly from a CG perspective but speaking of the set designs, the blacksmiths working around the clock, the seamstresses, the miniatures, etc etc.  Everything for these films shattered records previously thought to be impressive.   This is something Turbine should have taken into account when they decided to create Middle Earth for the masses to explore, clearly they aren’t expected to match the quality of the film, however I would expect them to take the same fervor in attention to detail and groundbreaking effects relative to other online games.  They however did not.  The infinite small details that make the story in the book come to life, and those of the films that suspend all disbelief are no where at all to be found in the game.  With the expectations that the films set for this the gameworld seems bland and vanilla no matter where you are looking.   It is simply another generic online game that looks no better and in many cases worse than many others.

Gameplay: Again absolutely nothing ground breaking here.. The quests are incredibly tedious for the first 10 levels with ZERO hook to get you interested in the story.  The very very beginning introduction starts off with you defending a courtyard, which is a step in the right direction, however after that it is simply one rat quest after another, interspered with fedex quests here or there.  There is an epic quest storyline that goes on but has zero compelling features in it and the fact that the hero you are following is so much weaker than yourself makes it even more insulting.

You can start off as any of the main characters in the story: Dwarf, Elf, Human or Hobbit however there is no major major differences between them.  By this I mean they share 90% of the same classes throughout, so each race serves mainly an aesthetic purpose which can be good in a way as it allows you to play your favorite class and explore the hobbit world or the elves but there is no real compelling reason to choose one over the other or any reason to feel special about being an elf as there is a human of the same class out there that is identical to you without the pointy ears.

There are some slightly innovative mechanics for combat but really nothing to write home about.

Lastly, once you get your first character above lvl 10 you are able to do ‘monster play’ which allows you to start a lvl 60 evil character(orc, spider, worg etc etc).  This could prove interesting as it opens the whole world up on the other side so I’ll give them that.

Price: There doing something right here.  You can sign up for a 10 day free trial and convert it for 9.99 / month.  No box fee which is nice to see.  However compare this to a game like Requiem, which is 100% free, looks much better visually and has more exciting and developed gameplay from the start and that 9.99 still seems overpriced.

At the end of the day it seems all too clear that either Turbine bit off far more than they could chew, or their main intention here was to cash in on the immense success of the brand – wanting to take as little risk as possible due to the fact that almost anything they produced would be gobbled up by hordes of rabid fans.   Consequentially what they ended up producing was a product that visually can’t compare to it’s competion let alone attempt to step into the massive shoes that Peter Jackson created for the brand, and gameplay wise has nothing unique to appeal to players over any of the other games offered out there.  This strikes me as a major disservice to the Brand in general, once you know what went into writing the books and then the insanity that went into creating arguable some of the greatest films ever made.  Perhaps Turbine was doing the big corporate thing and playing it safe or perhaps they bit off more than they could chew, either way I see them in a slightly tarnished light because of this project.

In a world with so many high quality free mmo’s being produced these days(Requeim, Shaiya, Last Chaos to name a few) if you want to step into this arena and charge people money for a monthly subscription you had damn well be able to justify it on all fronts… LOTRO does so on none, which saddens me to no end.  Someone please call Bethesda to fix this mess!

EuroGamer standing behind unfair and ignorant reviews?

YouTube Preview Image

I have respect for what this company is doing with this game.. They are going down a road that is against popular WoW trends and aren’t sacrficing their vision to play it safe.  A lot of things get me pumped for this game and what this company is doing so it ticks me off when I see something like this.  However I don’t know both sides of the story so I can’t judge or comment.

http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=185060

To quote the above linked thread:

Just the facts:

Darkfall scores a 2 out of a possible 10. Reviewers hardly played the game based on the server logs.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/da…-online-review

Eurogamer’s MMO Editor came to me over a month ago and asked for 2 accounts to review Darkfall which they promptly received. Today, more than a month later they came out with their long awaited review and we REALLY flunked it would seem. Darkfall got 2/10.

2/10 according to the Eurogamer scoring policy means: Avoid at all costs etc. You can find the scoring policy here:

http://www.eurogamer.net/scoring_policy.php

Scroll down to 2 and see how much this guy hated Darkfall and how strongly Eurogamer prompts everyone to avoid it at all costs.

The MMO editor warned me personally about the bad review on the way, and I asked him to give us some consideration and get another reviewer on the case since 2/10 is the lowest review they’ve ever given, and Darkfall’s reviews so far have been mostly good ones. It sounded very unfair to me and I appealed its publication. Not even the harshest critics of the game or the trolls on various forums would give it that low a score. This is a niche game we explained and perhaps the reviewer’s play-style was completely different and he was maybe the wrong kind of person to review the game. Darkfall isn’t for everyone after all, and having someone who can’t handle this kind of game write the review would be unfair both to the game and to Eurogamer readers. You can’t use the same tool for every job. Eurogamer’s MMO editor refused and basically said that he carefully selected a reviewer that would be fair to the game and that he would stand by the review. Then he posted the review.

When we read the hostile review by Ed Zitron, one thing became apparent: he had not played the game at all. Eurogamer readers and Darkfall players are posting bullet lists of factual errors in the story. The reviewer hadn’t even figured out the very basics of the game before he wrote about it. We checked the logs for the 2 accounts we gave Eurogamer and we found that one of them had around 3 minutes playtime, and the other had less than 2 hours spread out in 13 sessions. Most of these 2 hours were spent in the character creator since during almost every one of the logins the reviewer spent the time creating a new character. The rest of the time was apparently spent taking the low-res screenshots that accompanied the article. At no point did this reviewer spend more than a few minutes online at a time.

Darkfall is the largest MMORPG game of its kind and this guy spent a few minutes playing(?) before he tore it apart. How can someone do that responsibly? Ed Zitron didn’t even give Darkfall a chance.

The entire review is opinionated and hostile; it attacks the game, the creators and the company at every chance. The creators and developers of Darkfall, as well as the Darkfall community through its reaction, consider this review suspect and question the motives behind its publication. We can take a bad review, but not like this. Even the worst reviews that we’ve received commend our efforts and speak of the potential of Darkfall. The majority of our players love the game. This review might keep new players from ever trying a game they would enjoy.

We sent the play-time information to Eurogamer and asked them to take down the article as it is damaging our game’s reputation but also Eurogamer’s reputation. We asked to get an unbiased reviewer on the case who will actually play the game before writing about it. They said that taking it down now would be more damaging to their reputation than if they left it up. After our reaction to publicize the play history of their reviewers to protect our game, they asked us to wait while they try to confirm what we already knew from our logs. We’re afraid that waiting any longer is unacceptable to us, because this review was designed to drive people away from our game and allowing it to remain without any kind of reaction is out of the question. Out of professional courtesy we’ve waited 5 hours longer than we said we would before posting this.

An update: Eurogamer got back to us via their editor and said that their reviewer is a contributing writer rather than a staff writer, that he claims to have spent at least 9 hours playing the game and they will stand by their publication. We wrote back that this is a lie and that our server logs

(which they already have) show the playtime down to the second and they are at their disposal. They offered to re-review the game and see if the second reviewer has a different opinion than the first one. We wrote back that it might be hard to find someone to confirm the first review, especially if they actually play the game.

Wicked little Game – Meritous

Meritus

Stumbled upon this as I was going through the available games in Ubuntu today.  Anyways this is a wickedly fun little dungeon crawler gam with some great game mechanics that make it challenging, strategic and fun.  Definitely recommend everyone go check it out.  I believe the game world is procedurally generated as there are 3000 rooms to explore and over 10 000 monsters to kill.

It was nearly impossible to find a link anywhere online via google so I’ll throw em up here to help people out in the future:

Website – http://www.asceai.net/meritous/

I don’t get to feel special anymore as I see there is a windows version also available on the website.  So M$ users should go fill your boots!
