Quality Difference between MPEG-1 and MPEG-2

Is there one you ask?  From what I can tell, yes there is.  Was doing a bit of encoding today and for whatever reason videos that I encode in Tencoder with H264 will not open properly in Adobe Premier or After Effects so I ran down the list of other codecs and low and behold mpeg-1 opens fine.  Seeing as Mpeg-2 is a newer format(still ancient mind you) than mpeg-1 I wanted to encode it in that too but even that wouldn’t open properly so Mpeg-1 it is.

Anyways as I had these two files sitting there I decided to do a quick check if there were any differences at all between then.  At first I couldn’t really notice much as I played the videos one after another but then I paused them both on nearly the exact frame and zoomed in.  Good god Mpeg-2 is horrible, the quality on an mpeg-1 is much better.  Both videos were opened in the exact same video player and encoded with the exact same settings

See for yourself.  Moral of the story, if you’re ever forced between the two, go with Mpeg-1
