Fullscreen video in VLC = Black Screen? Crashes mplayer?Apr 16th, 2012 | By admin | Category: Linux / Freebsd
Alright, this was a 2 two lesson that I should have blogged about the first time I encountered it but didn’t.
Here’s what happened: I was settling down into bed and wanted to watch Moon before I fell asleep. The problem was as soon as I fullscreened the movie it just went black. I could resize it down again and get the picture back but as soon as I made the window bigger than a certain size it was just all black.. Good times. Worse yet it just crashed mplayer outright.
After 2 hours of trying to figure out how to install VLC 2.0 in Debian Squeeze – you can’t btw, well not easily and it’s definitely not worth it to try, I was looking at the error output and saw a message about memory.. Sure enough I just closed down every god damn program running, tried it again and it worked.. Looks like the problem was that my machine was out of RAM, bah!
So if yuo are having this problem just close down enough programs, free up enough ram and it will go away.
