Dovecot not starting – no errors logged

So after wrestling with courier and postfix for days with no success I’m trying to see if Dovecot will allow me to have a fully functioning smtp server.  The main problem I faced recently was dovecot just not starting at all and I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me.  The service wasn’t starting at all, i checked netstat -aunt to see if it was even listening to the correct ports and it wasn’t.. Nothing in /var/log/syslog was showing anything, the situation seemed bleak 🙂  But then I typed ‘dovecot’ into shell for some reason and lo and behold it spit out and error message telling me that /usr/lib/dovecot/imap didn’t exist.

This of course led to the first real breakthrough here as I realized that dovecot-pop3d and dovecot-imapd aren’t installed by default.. So word to the wise, if dovecot isn’t starting up and you aren’t seeing anything in your syslog make sure that the dovecot-pop3 and imap daemons are installed.
