Upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10… again… no format this time

Well after my sound cutting out on me while watching a youtube vid for about the 1000’s time I decided to tentatively take the plunge into 11.10, the wounds of the last time still fresh in my memory.

Sure enough the upgrade produced a plethora of errors, and sure enough(much to my complete show and awe) I am now sitting here with an upgraded OS that actually is working better than it was before the upgrade.

Some hiccups though:

  • Graphics problems: Go to ati.com find the latest proprietary drivers and re-install them
  • Desktop cube not working: Unity is a piece of garbage in my mind and messed up everything.  Disable it by using the classic desktop when you log in the beginning.  Then go here www.youtube.com/watch?v=onxWT8rIRE8
  • Emerald not working: No fix for this, it isn’t supported anymore in 11, uninstall it
  • Acer-Aspire 5253 jacksense not working:  Now this one has plagued me for well over a year now, literally the last major hurdle preventing me from enjoying this OS with my new computer.   Strangely enough you need to tell asla that you have an asus chipset.  you need to edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and change this: options snd-hda-intel model=auto to this options snd-hda-intel model=,asus
I think that might be it, besides my keyboard shortcut for terminal  not working we are in the butter zone now baby.. Huzzah!!
